Favourite Frankel Memories

“Emotions were running high on 2000 Guineas day. I was thinking that I would not be involved with the Frankel story for much longer. My retirement was looming up fast; the end of August 2011 in fact. I was so proud to have played a part in his story, as I watched him canter down to the start. So professional about his job, the perfect racehorse.
“‘THEY’RE OFF!’ I could not believe my eyes and ears at the roar of the crowd. He set off at such a rate, I was thinking that surely he could not keep up this pace for a mile! Many years earlier, riding work in Lambourn as an apprentice, it was drummed into us that horses can only gallop flat out for three furlongs, and then they would fall into a heap…
“Not so with Frankel. Goosebumps ran up and down my neck and spine - the race was over, he had done it. My career was now fulfilled. Seeing a lot of the Juddmonte gang around the winners’ enclosure to a triumphant reception was an awesome, Frankel-tastic moment!”
