Swiss storms to Newbury success

Swiss Storm set up a possible tilt at next month's Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster after winning the Wedgewood Estates EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes at Newbury (Saturday 17th September).
Out of the frame on his first start at Haydock, the David Elsworth-trained two-year-old took a giant step forward to give his sire Frankel another winner.
Forcing the pace with odds-on favourite City Of Joy throughout, the giant-framed 4/1 chance pulled impressively clear inside the final furlong to cross the line with a length and three-quarters in hand.
Elsworth said: "It was a total misconception that he was outpaced and that six furlongs didn't suit him.
"He has got bags of speed. I nearly put him in the Mill Reef but this race was worth nearly as much with all the bonuses.
"He will probably go for the Racing Post Trophy. Obviously he is a very exciting horse. He has always been a big horse. He was a big foal and a big yearling.
"One doesn't want to get carried away as it was only a maiden he has won but he has pleased us ever since we have had him."
The winner is now no bigger than 40/1 for next year's Qipco 2000 Guineas.
Swiss Storm is out of Lordship Stud's star producer Swiss Lake, a Listed winner herself and dam of four stakes performers including Gr.3 winners Swiss Spirit and Swiss Diva. The Frankel colt was unsold at 350,000 guineas as a foal at Tattersalls, and was purchased by David Elsworth as a yearling the following year for 235,000 guineas, with breeders Lordship Stud subsequently regaining a share.
