Icespire wins on debut
Taken from the Thoroughbred Daily News, 11th October 2016:
Icespire (Frankel - Quest to Peak by Distant View), a half-sister to the operation's Gr.1 1000 Guineas and Gr.11 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Special Duty - pictured - was sent off the 6-4 favourite fitted with a hood and found herself in rear early.
Making stealthy progress to gain the lead with over 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, the homebred stayed on strongly to win by four lengths from Mouille Point (Motivator) and become the 16th winner for Frankel.
"She just stood in the stalls there and was relaxed, but a month ago she was a bit of a handful," rider Robert Havlin said. "She was the ultimate professional but when the gates opened she stood still, so I just took my time on her. She used to get on her toes a bit, but we've kept the same rider on her every day. She wears the hood at home every day and has been as good as gold in it. I rode her work on Friday and she felt classy and she gave me that feel here. She'll definitely get further.
"She's a lengthener and she settled into a rhythm really nicely. She's a big-framed filly and will be a lovely filly next year."
The dam, who is a half to the dual Gr.1 Beldame Stakes and Gr.1 Ogden Phipps Handicap and Gr.1 Ruffian Handicap, Gr.1 Go for Wand Handicap and Gr.1 Humana Distaff Handicap heroine Sightseek (Distant View) and Gr.1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes and Gr.1 Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap winner Tates Creek (Rahy), also has a filly foal by Into Mischief and has been bred back to that sire.
The third dam Nijinsky Star (Nijinsky) produced the Gr.2 Tidal Handicap winner and Gr.1 Santa Barbara Handicap third Revasser (Riverman) and Gr.1 Kentucky Oaks and Gr.1 Hempstead Handicap runner-up Hometown Queen (Pleasant Colony), while her less-distinguished daughter Willstar (Nureyev) excelled in her second career by throwing the Gr.1 Prix de la Foret and Gr.2 Palomar Breeders' Cup Handicap scorer Etoile Montante (Miswaki).
